Honey Garlic Salmon

Here’s a healthful, delicious recipe the entire family will enjoy. And here’s the best way to remove the ingredients’ strong odors – fish and garlic — once the cooking is done.

ingredients

  • 12 oz. (340 g) salmon, cut into 2-3 fillet strips
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon warm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 lemon, sliced into wedges
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley

PREP TIME 10 minutes | COOK TIME 5 minutes | TOTAL TIME 15 minutes

directions

  1. Season the surface of the salmon with salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Set aside.
  2. Mix the honey, water, apple cider vinegar or lemon juice and a pinch of salt together. Stir to combine well.
  3. Heat up an oven-safe skillet (cast-iron skillet preferred) on high heat. Add the olive oil. Pan-fry the salmon, skin side down first, for about 1 minute. Turn the salmon over and cook for 1 minute. Turn it over again so the skin side is at the bottom.
  4. Add the garlic into the pan, saute until slightly browned. Add the honey mixture and lemon wedges into the skillet, reduce the sauce until it’s sticky. Salmon with honey garlic sauce is one of the best salmon recipes.
  5. Finish it off by broiling the salmon in the oven for 1 minute or until the surface becomes slightly charred (optional step).
  6. Top the salmon with parsley and serve immediately.

French Onion Soup

Onions are an essential ingredient in so many great recipes, including this classic cheesy soup. But not everyone loves their odor. We’re the key ingredient to eliminating the onion smell.

ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 4 onions, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2 fresh thyme sprigs
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup red wine, about 1/2 bottle
  • 3 heaping tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 quarts beef broth
  • 1 baguette, sliced
  • 1/2 pound grated Gruyere

PREP TIME 15 minutes | COOK TIME 55 minutes | TOTAL TIME 1 hours 10 minutes

directions

  1. Melt the stick of butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, and salt and pepper and cook until the onions are very soft and caramelized, about 25 minutes.
  2. Add the wine, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer until the wine has evaporated and the onions are dry, about 5 minutes. Discard the bay leaves and thyme sprigs.
  3. Dust the onions with the flour and give them a stir.
  4. Turn the heat down to medium low so the flour doesn’t burn, and cook for 10 minutes to cook out the raw flour taste.
  5. Now add the beef broth, bring the soup back to a simmer, and cook for 10 minutes. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper.
  6. When you’re ready to eat, preheat the broiler. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking sheet in a single layer. Sprinkle the slices with the Gruyere and broil until bubbly and golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes.
  7. Ladle the soup in bowls and float several of the Gruyere croutons on top.

Insecticidal Soap

Kirk’s remedies and recipes are suggestions provided by customers like you and are in no way guaranteed to work for all.

Kirk’s will help keep pests out of your garden. For more than 100 years, southern gardeners have relied on Kirk’s Castile soap as an all-purpose fungicide and insecticide that won’t harm the environment. Dissolving this nontoxic soap in water is a safe, effective way to get rid of fungi, aphids, mealy bugs, spider mites, and much more. Kirk’s recommends that you try a small test patch before use.

ingredients

Spray Bottle: Use any clean spray bottle or garden sprayer.

Castile Soap: The active ingredient in insecticidal soap comes from the fatty acids in vegetable oils. So, it’s important to use the real thing, such as Kirk’s 3-in-1 Head to Toe Nourishing Cleanser.

Water: Tap water is perfectly fine for making insecticidal soap.

directions

  1. Mix together 1 tablespoon of soap to 2 cups of water.
  2. Pour into the spray bottle.

featured product

additional tips

The best time to spray insecticidal soap is early morning or evening when temperatures are cool so the plant will stay wet longer. Apply thoroughly and be sure to check the undersides of leaves. Insect infestations often require a second treatment with insecticidal soap in about one week. Wash vegetables and fruit before eating.

Liquid Laundry Detergent

Follow these quick & simple steps for a deep clean at an affordable price! Try it with our Kirk’s Fragrance Free bar to eliminate fragrance for those with sensitive skin or fragrance allergies.

ingredients

1 cup borax

1 cup washing soda

1 cup Kirk’s 3 in 1 Head to Toe Nourishing Cleanser

17 cups of water (just over a gallon)

10-15 drops of essential oil (optional)

directions

  1. Dissolve the cup of borax and cup of washing soda in six cups of hot water. You can either heat cold water to a low boil on the stove, turn off the heat and add the two powders from measuring cups, or you could heat water in an electric kettle or in the microwave and then pour the boiling water over the powders.
  2. Stir until the dry ingredients are completely dissolved.
  3. Pour the mixture into a large bucket and add the castile soap.
  4. Mix together and then pour the soap mixture into your preferred container. If you’re using plastic containers, wait until the liquid has cooled first.

featured product

additional tips

A two-gallon bucket is easiest to use because it gives you space to stir the homemade liquid laundry soap together without making a mess. But if you don’t have that size bucket, use a smaller container for the mixture and then add the difference in water amount directly to your detergent bottles.

As the homemade liquid laundry detergent sits, it may turn partly to gel. Give the container a good shake before you open it and that will break up any gel clumps. This detergent doesn’t make a lot of suds, so don’t worry if you don’t see sudsy water in your front-loading washer.

For stains, rub a little bit of the liquid detergent on the stained area before you throw it in the washer.
